Paulo Thiago: Seriously Underestimated

Call him what you want, a rising star, a sleeping giant, I call him the future UFC welterweight champion. Hailing from Brazil, Paulo Thiago is a current UFC welterweight awaiting his next fight against Mike Swick this Feb. at UFC 109. Aside from being a black belt in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, he is also a active member of BOPE, (Batalhão de Operações Especiais) an elite special police force in his hometown of Brasília. Other than his Jiu-Jitsu and Judo accolades he has first class Muay Thai training which he put on display at UFC 95 when he viciously knocked out UFC superstar Josh Koscheck. As I said earlier, my humble prediction is that sooner than later we're going to see Paulo wearing the UFC welterweight championship.

WEC 46 Results: "Smooth" Takes the Belt / Return of the "Cali Kid"

A new undisputed WEC lightweight champion was crowned last night as Ben Henderson capitalized on one of the very few mistakes made by the former champ, Jamie Varner. Henderson submitted Varner with a split second "arm-in" standing guillotine choke. Though the ARCO Arena in Sacramento witnessed a great main event, it was truly packed to capacity to witness the return of their "California Kid". Urijah Faber gave his home town a great fight as he caught Rafael Assuncao in a rear naked choke. The former featherweight champion looks to continue in his comeback to possibly face current featherweight champion, Jose Aldo for the title. The night also included great key wins by Mike Brown and Kamal Shalorus. Shalorus won by the a judges unanimous decision while Mike Brown won his bout with a rear naked choke.

UFC & M-1 Re-Open Possible Negotiations

After not looking like the UFC and M-1 would ever be able to agree on a deal for Fedor, both sides confirm that talks have "reopened". This time though it would be an epic acquisition for the UFC, with negotiations being made for Fedor Emelianenko and current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi. Dana White commented saying:
"It's not that I don't want to talk to M-1. I want to get this [expletive] done. I want him, and I want Fedor. I want to do it. And I never say never. They can call me right now, and we can start talking and figure this thing out. I'd love to get Mousasi in here. He should be. He deserves to be."

Emelianenko (31-1) and Mousasi (28-2-1) are both expected to fight again for Strikeforce in the spring. Hopefully this time around the fans will get what they want.

Former Pride FC Champ to Debut in the UFC

On New Year's day, the UFC announced its latest acquisition, former Pride lightweight champion Takanori Gomi. Gomi is rumored to make his UFC debut against top lightweight contender, Kenny Florian.

UFC 108: Results

Overall, it was a great night of fights. In my opinion Mr. Evans was very lucky he wasn't defeated by Thiago Silva due to Silva gassing out right as he had Rashad hurt in the final round. Rashad wins 2 rounds to 1 with the unanimous decision. Dos Santos answers all the questions on where he belongs in the heavyweight division with a devastating knock out against Pride veteran Gilbert Yvel. This win definitely puts Dos Santos at the very top of the UFC heavyweight food chain. Paul "Semtex" Daley makes a huge statement with a crazy show of punching power as he knocks out BJJ specialist Dustin Hazelett. Dana White later said he now feels that Daley is prepared to face the top contenders in the welterweight division.

UFC 108 TONIGHT!

Evans vs. Silva is definitely not a bad way to kick off 2010. Although the main card may lack some star power names for the casual fan, ask around or do a little research and you'll find that you won't want to miss Joe Lauzon vs. Sam Stout. Taking nothing away from the main event, Dos Santos vs. Gilbert Yvel has the makings to easily take "Fight of the Night" honors. Overall the card looks good on paper but what do you expect from the genius that is Joe Silva.

•MAIN CARD•
----------------------------
• Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva
• Dustin Hazelett vs. Paul Daley
• Junior Dos Santos vs. Gilbert Yvel
• Joe Lauzon vs. Sam Stout
• Dan Lauzon vs. Cole Miller

•PRELIMINARY CARD•
----------------------------
• Steve Cantwell vs. Vladimir Matyushenko
• Ryan Jensen vs. Mark Munoz
• Jake Ellenberger vs. Mike Pyle
